About

The Wretify
Philosophy

I built Wretify out of pain. A lot of it. Years of it.

Years of opening one writing software after another, each one promising to help me think and quietly doing the opposite.

I watched my own attention get strip-mined.

My ability to sit with an idea long enough for the thought to arrive got thinner every year.

I felt my brain overload and my deep work decay, and for a long time I blamed myself.

Then I understood that I wasn’t the only one.

It is happening on a global scale. A slow, almost invisible decline in our cognitive abilities, sold to us as productivity, dressed up as features.

So I stopped waiting for someone else to build the writing software I needed, and I built it.

My vision was simple.

When I am gone and someone asks what Wretify was, what it was for, this is the answer.

These are the coordinates I would leave on the wall of a burning building for my children to find.

My take on intellectual property and integrity, in a world running hard in the other direction.

Wretify exists to protect the conditions under which a person can think, and to refuse every shortcut that would take that thinking away from them.

Everything below is downstream of that.

Not a list of features I wanted.

A single commitment, traced outward from the thing that hurt me most.

Writing is thinking,
and thinking is volitional

Most software treats writing as output, words to be produced faster, smoother, with less friction. I reject that at the foundation, because I have lived the cost of believing it.

Writing is not the transcription of a thought you already had. Writing is the act by which the thought arrives.

The struggle on the page is not a problem to optimize away.

It is the work itself. Every time writing software removed that struggle for me, it removed the one thing I came to the page for.

It took me a long time to realize a hard truth: the quality of my writing can never be greater than the quality of my thinking. And the truth went deeper than my work.

I write about self improvement and personal growth, complex things, the kind of articles meant to provoke a paradigm shift in how a person sees their own life.

I don’t write only to make those articles. I write to become a better person to be around.

So the line keeps going: the quality of my life can never be greater than the quality of my thinking. And so… the quality of my thinking, for me, is built almost entirely through reflective writing.

That is the whole chain.

Better thinking, better writing, better living.

Each one is the ceiling of the next.

That is why I needed a quiet place that would protect the thinking instead of stealing it.

Nothing on the market would. So I built one.

So the question I ask of every decision is borrowed from Harry Frankfurt: does this serve a person’s first order desire, the immediate pull, the want, or their second order desire, who they want to be, what they would endorse on reflection?

I know both states in my own body.

One is being pulled: you open the app, you lose forty minutes, you close it feeling emptied, somewhere you didn’t mean to go.

That is compulsion, the immediate want overriding the reflective one, a small loss of self each time. The other is being drawn the way you are drawn to an old friend: you consent to the want, and you leave feeling more like yourself than when you began.

That is volition, wanting and endorsing the want, pointing the same direction.

The entire attention economy is engineered to produce the first state. It works best when you, the deliberator, go to sleep.

I built Wretify to do the opposite, to keep you awake inside your own work.

Every principle that follows is a protection of that one condition.

Constraint as the feature

A blank, quiet, bounded space is not a limitation. That is the product.

The rest of the industry stuffs the screen, I clear it. “Less” is not a stage I am passing through on the way to “more.” It is the design.

So while you write, every feature and function disappears.

The screen holds your words and nothing else, no toolbars, no menus, no chrome competing for your eye.

It is the feeling of an old typewriter, that total single surface focus, except the latest technology is running underneath the calm.

The power is all there. It is simply refusing to interrupt you. I have spent every day for months making this beautiful and minimal, because the stillness is not decoration.

It is the philosophy made physical. “Constraint is the feature” stops being an abstract claim the moment you open the app and feel your shoulders drop.

Deliberate friction,
so the AI never does the thinking

This is the line I will not cross. The AI inside Wretify is a thinking partner, never a thinking replacement.

It asks the better question, it does not hand you the answer.

The moment a feature does the convergence for you, collapses your mess into “here’s what it means,” it has stolen the one cognitive act that was yours.

Protecting bad writing isn’t kindness. It’s collusion.

An app whose whole thesis is “don’t let AI do your thinking” cannot contain a feature that does your thinking, or it is arguing with itself.

100% Sovereignty
Wretify provides the intelligence,
you own your words forever

Your words are not my hostages. They live in your Google Drive, in a readable format, as yours.

If Wretify disappeared tomorrow, every file would still be there, intact, downloadable, yours.

No database holding them.

No proprietary format. No export as the painful escape hatch I had to claw through a dozen times in other writing software.

Notion stores your work on its own servers in a proprietary block format you cannot access directly; its Markdown export loses database relations, formulas, and page structure. Scrivener wraps your prose inside a proprietary project format with no published specification; without the software, your chapters are scattered across folders with machine-generated names. Ulysses stores your writing in a proprietary format inside an opaque iCloud container; if your subscription lapses, you can read but not edit your own words.

Wretify stores your writing as plain Markdown files in your own Google Drive, readable by any text editor, yours whether the app exists or not.

I am confident enough in the partnership that I don’t need to hold your work captive to keep you.

A relationship built on trust, not ransom.

I call this Zero Hostage, and it reaches past your data, all the way to the company itself.

No behavioral data, ever

I do not watch you to optimize you. No engagement telemetry, no streaks, no “you’re on fire,” no machinery tuned to pull you back.

The instant writing software starts measuring your behavior to increase your usage, it has switched sides, it now serves its own retention over your second order self.

I refuse the entire category.

I refuse it because I have been the product before, and I will not do it to you.

Cognitive health over user freedom

Sometimes the honest thing is to not give you what you ask for in the moment.

We want infinite options, maximum features, the next hit of dopamine.

What we need is a protected place to think. When those collide, I serve the need.

Done in the open, this is not paternalism, it’s the same reason you’d thank a friend who didn’t hand you the cigarette.

Research-backed only —
built on psychology, not trends

Nothing ships because it’s fashionable or because a competitor has it. Every addition has to trace back to a defensible claim about cognition or wellbeing. I build from psychological first principles outward, never from the feature backlog inward.

Honest, cost-plus pricing

I charge a real price, drawn from real costs plus a small margin. Not the lowest possible number, which is unsustainable, and is often a “doing good” delusion that ends in collapse. And not the highest the market will bear. Sustainable, not greedy. I set the price so the mission can outlive me.

What Wretify is,
and is not

It is not another note taking app with search and filters. Not productivity software measured in words per hour. Not a feature accumulator racing to feel magical.

It is, concretely, writing software, a distraction free writing environment for nonfiction writers working on the articles, essays, and books that are really thinking worked out on the page.

In one sentence: Wretify is a clean, minimalist writing app for nonfiction writers, built for focus — with an AI that has read everything you've written and refuses to write it for you. The name comes from “rectify.” Wretify does not generate your prose, rewrite your text, or disguise AI writing as human.

You open it, you write, and an AI sits beside you as a thinking partner that sharpens your questions instead of producing your prose. Your manuscripts stay in your own Google Drive.

That is the object: a screen, a cursor, a blank page, and the latest technology hidden beneath a typewriter’s calm.

And underneath the object, it is a cognitive instrument, a quiet, bounded room where your thinking, your clarity, and your mental and physical health are the things being served, and where you leave more yourself than when you arrived.

The promise, in your hands: Your writing will never be locked in. Talk to your own work. The thinking stays yours.

When any idea reaches the corner of my mind, a feature, a growth tactic, a pricing change, a lucrative partnership, I run it through three questions:

Does this serve a person’s volition, or exploit their compulsion?

Does it keep the thinker awake, or do the thinking for them?

Does it create clutter, or a bounded, quiet field of attention, a space where only the next necessary thing is allowed to exist?

If it fails that test, it does not belong in Wretify.

No matter how clever, how popular, or how profitable.

These are the coordinates.

My promise to you is to never forget them.
